The other day brother-in-law was talking about cooking teriyaki chicken in the crock-pot. It sounded delicious so I decided to make us some for dinner yesterday. Just as the aroma began to envelop the kitchen (and my nose) I thought it would be a good idea to throw in some rice for a more filling meal. After tossing in the rice and stirring, however, I noticed some strange dust at the bottom of the bag. Looking more closely I saw - to my horror - several maggots crawling in the bag. My jaw dropped, and I looked from the bag to the crock-pot and back to the bag. And here's the worst part: I actually considered grabbing the chicken from the crock-pot and salvaging it.
What can I say, I'm cheap. All I could think about was the money I'd wasted on the chicken, the teriyaki sauce, and the chicken broth I'd thrown in. I decided to call Eric and see what he thought (after all, it was his chicken and his money, too). It was a no brainer. "Throw it out," he said, so I did. And yes, here's a photo of the chicken in the garbage. Hey, at least I didn't post a photo of the rice pals.

Next time save yourself the phone call and toss it straight away! Yiggy.
Oh, sad day!
I think you made the right decision!
I think you made the right decision, too. This is up there with "If it's a little hairy, it's a little scary" and "If it falls on the floor, it ain't food no more", except I don't have a cute rhyme that involves creepy crawlies.
Oh bummer!! I would have had the same pause to think about it too (oh the $)... but with every bite I'd be wondering what else I was chewing! Funny post! Caleb is up visiting and we were all around the computer reading your blog. I had to read them the Oil Burner post. We cracked up laughing. We love your blog!
Love you!
hmm. I think I'd like the recipe, sans the bugs...
