All Wet

Here's my little Aspen Roo. She looks harmless enough, right?
Sometimes I let her play on the bathroom counter while I'm standing there, getting ready.
Yesterday she was up there and she saw something she wanted. So she went for it.
She climbed into the sink, and it was a perfect fit!
Then she proceeded to turn the faucet on and drown her pants with water. I could have stopped her, but she was so entertaining to watch! She loved getting all wet.

"Lost" in Season 1

Maybe it's the sandy beach, the mysterious cast or the scary noises in the forest. Something about this show has me hooked! It's not like I'm going to pass out if I don't watch at least one episode every day, but it's just so much fun to watch it. It's this wonderful new way that Eric and I have found to bond with one another (wink wink). We watch the show, we give each other surprised glances throughout the episode, and then talk about possible interpretations afterward. It's sort of like being in a book club with just your spouse, only you're watching t.v. instead of reading a book. And that's way more scholarly....not!
The truth is that Eric and I don't have a television because we reeeeaally like to watch t.v. However, we also hate the way we feel when we watch too much. Thus we have realized not having a t.v. is the only way for us to control our t.v. urges. So instead we rent dvds now and then and watch them on our laptop. However, the last time we went to check out a movie we couldn't find a single one that sounded even remotely cool so we decided to start watching Lost episodes and....bingo! We can't stop. So you might ask, what's the difference between watching Lost episodes on a laptop and just having a t.v? well, we're only watching one show, the commercials are 30 seconds long, and we control how much and when we watch. It's the best situation and I've got to go now so I can find out if Claire ever returns from the forest with "the others" and......

Home Sweet Home

I always get melancholy when I have to leave my family. My brother Ian always says, "family's the most important thing," and boy is he right! It's been a lot of fun being out here in the east, seeing new places and having fun adventures, but nothing compares to being close to home, which I've discovered always seems to be where my family is. See that item in my mom's hand there? That's a tube of Blistex, which she always has on hand, and we all tease her about it. See how Demri (the one in the blue dress) is posing? She's the quirkiest little thing I've ever seen, and just wants everyone to be happy and laughing. Over Christmas break my sister-in-law Tia (in the glasses) sent hilariously mysterious texts to a guy Demri works with (and likes), telling him in the end that she (Tia) was Demri's sister-in-law, and asking him if he was interested in Demri. What did Demri do? Laugh it off!
Sasha (in the scarf) has that beautiful long hair, and we've tried to get her to cut it, but she won't. She came so close one day to letting me do it, but just can't stand the thought of it being gone. James, Sasha's hubby, dotes on her every chance that he gets, but he also loves her long hair, which is another reason she wouldn't cut it.
Mishell, next to Eric, could eat a horse and it wouldn't show. And my brother Ian, with the huge smile, is a manly man, yet loves to bake. We often share recipes over the phone, and he gets really excited about silicone bakeware.
To everyone in my family: I love you guys, and can't wait till we can live nearer!

A Couple Thoughts.....and a couple outings

I was thinking the other day about how the best times I spend with people are the ones where we're just talking and hanging out. When my sisters were here visiting in October we did a lot of things, but the best time was when we stayed home one afternoon and chatted while playing yahtzee.

When my dad and step mom Lisa were here in November we drove to Concord one day and had chili at the Main Street Market Cafe (shown above; just pretend that suv isn't there for a moment!). We sat inside for hours while rain poured down outside, just talking. It was a moment I'll always remember! Yesterday Eric, Aspen and I headed out there for some chili and sandwiches, and had a great time (the food is delicious!). It was a much needed outing for all of us.

On our way home we found this quaint little church without any sign or name. We thought it was pretty, and loved how the stone stood out between the snow and the darkness of the trees.
A couple days ago after a large snow storm we headed out to the Middlesex Fells Reserve for a little snowshoeing. We bought our snowshoes a year ago and hadn't had a chance to try them out yet, so we were anxious to take advantage of the storm.
Here are some photos of our short trip.

(Poor Aspen couldn't move with all her snow clothes on! She was a trooper, though.)

29 Going on 30

I've always thought there were several things a thirty-year-old woman should have. Now that my time has come and this blessed day is about to arrive, I've made a list:
1. a child (check)
2. a pair of clogs (check)
note: see photo above. aren't they cute?
3. a pair of dress boots to wear to church with all my skirts (check, check and check)
note: i can probably stop buying boots now
4. a couple cardigans (check as of yesterday)
5. a great bread recipe (check)
6. a Swiffer
Looks like I'm doing good except for the Swiffer. Have you ever tried one of those things? They're handy, but you just can't scrub dried food off the kitchen floor with a Swiffer mop. The only reason I feel like I need one of those is because on every Swiffer commercial they've got a young mom pushing it around, in a cardigan, I might add! Stay tuned for future thoughts on turning 30!

Skiing ain't so bad

When Eric and I were dating, I was aware of the fact that he was a ski addict. If he were to be able to spend the rest of his life being a ski instructor (which he was at one point), living off of ketchup and saltines (which he did at one point) he would be tickled. I, on the other hand, am as coordinated as a wet noodle. A very wet noodle. Before we met I had been skiing once, and it was a very bad experience. However, like all relationships I knew some sacrifices were going to be required, and one of my sacrifices was going to be learning how to ski.
I had no desire to ski. None whatsoever. Growing up, my family did the camping thing, the fishing thing, the hanging around playing games thing, but never the snow (or water) skiing thing. Eric told me everything would be fine, and assured me that after a while I would enjoy myself. Yeah, right! Like I believed that. I just tried to get through each lesson, glad I was wearing goggles so Eric couldn't see all the eye-rolling that was going on underneath. Finally, after the fifth or so lesson, things started to click. And lo and behold, it's actually kind of fun. It's been three years now since I've started to enjoy myself (although last year I didn't get any skiing in from being pregnant). We went skiing several times with Eric's family over Christmas break. Here are some photos from our trip to Tamarack.

We took shifts watching Aspen. I tried to get her to play in the snow, but she wasn't interested, as her expression shows!

We played in the cafeteria for a while.
You can't beat these views, that's for sure!
